A Guide to Humic Material

When it comes to introducing farmers to Black Earth and humic material in general, there are usually three things they need to understand: what humic matter is, why it works so well as a soil additive, and what the differences between different brands are.

Black Earth Humic: Good for the Environment

Better returns and a better environment.

As a farmer or horticulturalist looking to improve the quality of your crops, one of your main concerns may very well be that the soil additive you choose is beneficial to the environment. Using products that are made only from organic materials will be one of the most important elements to your search. If you’ve already done some research, you’re probably somewhat familiar with humus and humalite, and the various benefits these materials have on your crops, but did you know that humic matter is actually beneficial to the environment as well? It’s one of the reasons why our products at Black Earth are comprised of at least 80% humic acid, and why we always use 100% organic materials when producing them.

Finding the Right Humic Material

Farmer choosing humics

Why it's important to find the right humic material for your farm.

Perhaps you have heard of humic material and are interested in giving it a try on your farm. Or, perhaps you have used some type of humic and fulvic acid soil additives in the past, and want to continue to enjoy stronger, healthier growth in future seasons. Either way, it's important that you find the right humic material for your farm.

Humic Acids Help Retain Precious Water

Drought Humic Acid

Humic Acids Can Help your Thirsty Crop

Many people in the US Midwest are being affected by the most severe drought in close to 60 years.  Growers in this area are seeing their crops wilt away and ultimately being mowed down or plowed under in hopes of seeing the rains return next year.  This year they saw a disaster in which their crops were stressed and stunted, ears of corn did not produce anything and their soils were dry and cracked, thirsty for water.  In times like these, growers look for answers and a solution to their problems.  There is a product that can help trap and store the precious moisture for parched crops; that is, humic acids.   Incorporating humic acids into your soils should be done as a management decision, in where, it is part of a conservation program combined with other effective crop management tools to help you bring the life of the soil back after so many years of synthetic fertilizer applications, pesticide applications and soil erosion events that have occurred.

Humalite or Leonardite - What's the Difference?

Humalite as Opposed to Leonardite

If you talk to most people who know about humates, even the users in Canada, they will have never have heard of the word Humalite. They refer to Humalite as Leonardite and do not know that there are significant differences between the two humate materials. It is important to understand these differences and not treat the two as equivalent. They have much the same materials and both are great sources of humic and fulvic acid, but per volume Humalite holds more active ingredient and less undesirables such as ash and heavy metals.

The Scoop on Black Earth Humic Acid: Research Studies

Humic Matter Applied Research

What research is saying about humic acid.

When you’re choosing agricultural products, such as soil additives, you want to ensure that they’ve been meticulously tested, and that there’s significant information to back the product’s claims. You want the product you’re about to invest in to be the best for your land. You want results and you want them to be proven. Seems pretty simple, right?

Humic Acid or Fulvic Acid?

Which one Should you Choose?

Many people wonder, when they have decided to make the shift towards more organic farming, should they use Humic Acid, Fulvic Acid or both?  What is the difference?  What makes one better over the other? What kind of results can they expect using Humics and Fulvics? The answer to this really depends on what you are trying to achieve:
